LESSON SUMMARY
Many music students often find the topic of minor scales to be rather confusing. This is not surprising given that there isn't just one version of the minor scale. Rather, professional musicians must learn how to navigate a number of unique minor scale variations that are each suited for different harmonic situations. For jazz musicians, the Dorian Scale is often the "go to" minor scale in many playing contexts. In today's Quick Tip, Dorian Scale: The Complete Guide, you'll discover how to build this unique scale, when to use it and how to solo with it on piano like a pro!

Quite basic
Well done! Thank you for sharing.
Go Jonny Go
Facile à jouer mais un sacré rendu à l'écoute
Thank you!
The d note in this instance I would call a passing note. But I love the way 9ths sound.
2 in my opinion.
讲的太棒了,虽然我听不懂你说什么😂😂😂,但是教学的内容好详细,看着你的视频都可以学习
That's great, thanks for watching!
Or…..and hear me out……V chords are just acting as diminished chords
Excellent lesson.
Thank you!
Just the kind of tuition I need right now; it is taking me ages to move from guitar to piano when singing/ songwriting.
Amazing
Thank you!
I always struggle to accompany myself on piano and will go back to guitar - thanks for this! As you can tell with my 'Song for Bruce (Take 2)' 😅
Great video. very useful information. However, I'm not sure these are proper chord substitutions. More like chord extensions: both by adding more chords (e.g. secondary dominants) and by extending the existing chords with additional tensions. A proper chord substitution would be e.g. in II-V-I swapping the V for IIb7, and I'm sure there's more.
If you play a lot with singers, you'll wind up playing tunes that are almost only major and minor turnarounds all night either as ballads or medium up in only a handful of keys. To alleviate the boredom I used to modulate through different keys during my solo - always returning and putting the singer clearly back in at the end.
Love it!
Excellent stuff bro, I have been playing the major scale riffs for too long, this is a fantastic beginning keyboard lesson to get me into minor key playing and song writing…
Awesome!
I suspect its the newbies that play like the intro.
How about rootless 2 5 1.
Amazing!
Thank you!
Hi :) thank you for this video!! It is such an inspiration eye-opening remark for me and my friend ❤
Thanks for watching!
I love this lick bro.
Thank you so much!
This was very cool. You’re a great player and teacher too 👏
Thank you so much!
The first and only yucky sounding lick on this channel :(
That sounds really pretty!
Thank you!
I find this kind of practical, piano-specific technique advice super valuable and hard to find. It’s easy to find resources on music theory or harmony but stuff like this which makes it actually pleasant to listen to is rare. More lessons like this please!

You are great teacher for jazz piano! It really helps me! Thank You for lessons! Greetings from Latvia (East Europe country), Rīga city. With huge respect ILvars
Thanks for watching from Latvia!
Very Very useful
Thank you!
Why is my brain so slow…? 😂
Thanks, John. I'm a rock and pop guy who isn't that interested in Jazz. But 'Kind of Blue' is a favorite album of mine. Your wonderful breakdown of this tune has me ready and prepared to improvise over these classic chords. Thanks, again.
That's fantastic, thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing my friend 😊 The Lord’s love + grace be with you His Hope + peace, in Life, and beyond the grave Hope you are all well and resting in Jesus saving love + grace 😊 Warmest Love + blessings friends 😊
John 3 verse 16 ^_^ please search the Gospel (Bible) all who read this. Your soul is far to precious to gamble in thinking there is no hell or need for salvation in The Lord Jesus Blessings friends ^_^
Thanks for the lesson. I´m gonna be an annoying internet-commenter and point out that it was probably Bill Evans that selected the voicings for 'So What'. Miles being the leader obviously came up with the concept and framework for the project, but Miles didn´t tell anyone what to play. Evans of course was known for his innovative use of quartal voicings.
So many cool ideas!
Eb major pentatonic same as C minor pentatonic.
ua-cam.com/video/g5Zq65GOPn0/v-deo.htmlsi=ZCKI0dxNBb4jYyUZ Speaking of Amazing Grace...here's another old hymn that, I think, uses the same technique?? Sounds like its even in the same key! Love your videos!!!👍
Thank you!
And remember, all notes are chord tones if you extend the chord far enough.
Not only will you SOUND like a pro, but you’ll BE a pro if and when you can play that pattern at that tempo.
I imagine this method works alright if you know your stuff. For an absolute newbie like myself, no idea what a diminished chord is, or any of those other terms apart from major & minor. The original way appears easier to a beginner like myself.
You can learn about these chords here: pianowithjonny.com/resources/
Cmajor pentatonic
I think I've found a pearl!👏 Your format is just perfect. Notes, numbers, slow analysis, and then with a metronome - this is what you need!👍 Subscribed!
Thank you!
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing...
Thank you for watching!
Oh, is that all?
It's it's more difficult than you make it look and not much simpler than learning any other song on piano.
Very, very cool!❤
Thank you!
