Thanks - very useful. However, I'm not sure maj13 is the correct notation for those chords in hack2: They lack both the 9th and the 11th, so I think they should rather be notated as Maj add13. The hack3 chords I would notate as maj13 no11.
Great lesson, Jonny!
Thank you!
I can see this working for a number of songs....but it seems that most songs have other mixed chords that dont fit at all with the progression. Ill have to give it a go again but im not real hopeful.

These are great! A very nice mini-system for practicing extensions. Even though I am a Piano With Jonny member, I get most of my practice modules and new ideas from PWJ UA-cam videos and Instagram posts. Makes my musical journey additions spontaneous and intuitive. Thanks, Jonny. Your work is a key part of my practice regimens and new inputs.

Run it in contrary motion and oblique motion. Also, try borrowing one note from the opposite one you’re playing all the way up. This concept works major/minor6 chords and well has dominant and dominantb5 <- coolest one.

Great insights into some of what makes blues piano sound "bluesy." I guess the next step is to learn these in all the common blues keys, then all 12. Also, what is a "Gospel Connector"? It's nowhere on the Internet.
I didn’t understand anything but cool reel
If you have a chord progression Eg c a f g You play c then the third of c which is e Ie c d e Then play a and the third of a which is c A b c F's third is a And B's third is g Play this in the same amount of time as you played the original
Just a thought: why is thirds a more advanced level than sixths :-)
how is it the key of c major when u play the black keys? genuinely asking 😅
The Em7 and A7 function as the 2-5 to get to Dm, however because it’s an Em7 and A7, he uses the D major scale. Also, when he plays the A7 and G7, he adds an implied b9 extension to the chord by using the b2 in the scale he uses to improvise. Hope this explains something lmao
Keep studying you will get there!
thank you for the explanation!!! do you know any resources that i could learn more about this? i rly appreciate all the help <3
@@malters7136I think you confused him even more
It's all about resolving tension. Dominant seven chords (such as G7) have a dissonance called tritone: B and F in the case of G7. This dissonance resolves nicely when followed by a chord a fifth below: G7 - C, for example. This can be further utilized in a fuction called 2-5-1, where a chord is followed by a fifth below twice or more. Dm7 - G7 - CM7, for example. If it were to be extended, Em7 - Am7 - Dm7 - G7 - CM7 could be a great example. To further utilize this function, you may use dominant seven chords instead of normal chords to emphasize that resolving tritone. In the video, he uses ( Em7 - A7 - [ Dm7 ) - G7 - CM7]. Em7 and A7 work as 2-5 to get to Dm7, which someone explained above, and the usual Am7 is replaced with A7, which is a dominant seven. This is called a secondary dominant. And as I said before, it's all about resolving tension. Dominant seven chords frequently utilize something called extensions. Basically, they are additional upper notes that make the chord 'spicier'; adding more dissonance to be resolved later. The common example shown in the video is b9, so he plays Bb on A7 and Ab on G7. This does not exactly explain everything, but I hope this helps.
👏🙏👍
Utterly brilliant. Thank you.
Thank you!
And that's All Folks C6 Ddim7 , well and what about the other degrees
This not the request I asked for. Try again.
For us beginners your tutorial is to fast. These shorts have some amazing chord arrangement & I would like to see a full version. Still waiting for the dark side of Happy Birthday in a full tutorial.
I think there’s two Jonny. I requested the dark side of Happy Birthday about a month ago showing us note to note & chord to chord. Is Jonny1 or Jonny2 working on this request? It’s still one of the best chord arrangement I’ve ever heard. I wait for your tutorial SOON.
Another brilliant crash course. Thank you so much, Jonny.

About the numbers: Jonny explains there are 4 voices. He is talking about *4 part harmony in a choir* where there are 4 separate parts. The highest women's voice is the *Soprano which he is calling #1.* The lower women's voice is the *Alto which he is calling #2.* The men's voices are lower in pitch than the women's, *Tenor is #3.* The lowest is *Bass #4.* The numbers have nothing to do with fingers or scale degrees.
Thank you for writing this!
Nice video. I've heard in 1st progression some Joe Dassen sounds. It sounds like "Salut..."😂
